Founded in 1902 in Nara, Japan, Kuretake began by producing traditional sumi ink and calligraphy tools used in shodō, or “the way of writing.” In this tradition, the line itself matters as much as the characters. Subtle shifts in pressure create variation in weight and rhythm, communicating skill and intent.

Introduced in 1973, Kuretake Fude Pens were among the first modern brush pens, designed to bring that tradition into portable format. “Bimoji,” meaning “beautiful lettering,” reflects the pen’s focus on expressive linework.
