About this product range
  • Designed after traditional calligraphy brushes
  • Water-based pigment ink
  • Waterproof once dry
  • Permanent and fade-resistant
  • Flexible brush tips in a range of line widths
  • Made in Japan

Founded in 1902 in Nara, Japan, Kuretake began by producing traditional sumi ink and calligraphy tools used in shodō, or “the way of writing.” In this tradition, the line itself matters as much as the characters. Subtle shifts in pressure create variation in weight and rhythm, communicating skill and intent.

Introduced in 1973, Kuretake Fude Pens were among the first modern brush pens, designed to bring that tradition into portable format. “Bimoji,” meaning “beautiful lettering,” reflects the pen’s focus on expressive linework. These pens look and feel like a traditional calligraphy brush with rich black pigment ink and responsive brush tips.

Ink flows smoothly and evenly without pressure, drying quickly to an archival, waterproof, fade-resistant finish that layers beautifully under markers and water media. The Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, and Large pens all have fiber tips for controlled flexibility, producing a full range of line widths, from hairline details to bold, confident strokes. The XT5 Medium behaves more like an actual brush, with real bristle-style fibers that splay under pressure. Each is finished with a contoured rubber grip inspired by bamboo brush handles.

Trusted by cartoonists, illustrators, and calligraphers worldwide, Bimoji Fude Pens reward every level of experience—ideal for hand lettering, manga, journaling, and more.
