About this product range
Tested and approved by professionals, for professionals, Grumbacher Pre-Tested Professional Oils have been one of America's favorite oil paints since 1905. Recently reformulated, the line now includes stronger, purer cadmiums and exciting contemporary colors.
Grumbacher Pre-Tested Oils are made with the finest pure pigments milled in select alkali-refined linseed oil, with the exception of the Whites described below. All 90 colors are highly pigmented, with tinting strength equal to or better than the leading professional brands. Pre-Tested Oils offer high chroma, superior tinting strength, excellent adhesion, outstanding working properties, the utmost lightfastness, and archival permanence.
Superba White is a smooth, buttery, heavy-bodied white ground in non-yellowing poppy seed oil. Superba is unaffected by exposure to light, freely intermixable with other colors, and offers enhanced opacity and tinting strength.
Titanium White is a permanent, heavy-bodied, versatile, opaque, pure white that is neutral in hue. It's ideal for applications where great opacity is required, and is considered the strongest tinting white.
Soft Titanium White is a permanent soft-bodied, opaque, non-yellowing Titanium White that is ground in poppy seed and sunflower oils, rather than linseed oil. These oils do not yellow with age, as does pure linseed oil. Soft Titanium White is also recommended for fluid wet-in-wet techniques.
Zinc White is a permanent, heavy-bodied, semi-opaque, cool white. It's designed especially for brilliant clear tints with all oil colors, and is excellent for glazing.
Pigment information
General reference notes about pigments can describe other media (such as oil). They do not verify this product’s exact formulation or behavior.
Mars Black
- Pigment code
- PBk11
- Type
- earth
- Chemical name
- iron oxides
- Chemical formula
- FeO or Fe2O3
- Properties
- Mars Black is an opaque black with a strong and cool masstone, a slightly warm tint, and a warm brown undertone. It is not as black as Ivory Black, but it dries more quickly and has three times the tinting strength. Mars Black is normally the only black available in acrylic form and that is safe to over paint. It can be used in all media without reservation and is widely used as an alternative to Lamp Black and Ivory Black.
- Permanence
- Mars Black is very lightfast with excellent permanence.
- Toxicity
- Mars Black has no significant hazards and is the only major black pigment considered non-toxic.
- History
- The word Mars refers to the Roman god of iron and war. Mars Black was developed in the early 20th century from inorganic, synthetic iron oxide.
- Description
- Black Iron Oxide, Iron Black, Magnetic Oxide, Mapico Black, Mineral Black. Sometimes labeled as Vine Black.
Burnt Umber
- Pigment code
- PBr7
- Type
- earth
- Chemical name
- iron oxides with manganese silicates or dioxide
- Chemical formula
- Fe2O3,MnO2 or Fe2O3+MnO2+nH2O+Si+Al2O3
- Properties
- Burnt Umber is a more intense reddish brown pigment that results from heating the clay pigment Raw Umber. It has medium to excellent tinting strength and high opacity, and it is quick drying in oil form. Burnt Umber is somewhat more transparent than Raw Umber. It has excellent color properties and can create a variety of subtle, clear tints when mixed with white. It can tend towards chalkiness in dark mixes in oil form, but overall it mixes well with other colors. To create a black color in oil form, mix Burnt Umber with Phthalo Blue or Ultramarine. To achieve a similar color in watercolor form, mix it with Ultramarine or Payne's Gray.
- Permanence
- Burnt Umber has good permanence.
- Toxicity
- Burnt Umber itself is considered non-toxic. If contaminated by manganese compounds, it may be highly toxic if inhaled and moderately toxic if ingested.
- History
- This pigment gets its name from the Latin word umbra, meaning shadow or shade. Its full name is listed as terra di ombra, meaning earth of shadow/shade, due to its original extraction from the area of Umbria, Italy. It has been used as a pigment since prehistoric times. Currently, the finest umber comes from Cyprus.
- Description
- Chestnut Brown, Euchrome, Jacaranda Brown, Mars Brown, Mineral Brown, Raw Brown, Spanish Brown, Van Dyke Umber. Cyprus Umber, Turkey Brown, and Turkey Umber are the best quality umbers.
Yellow Iron Oxide
- Pigment code
- PY42
- Chemical name
- iron(III)-oxide, hydrated
- Chemical formula
- Fe2O3 • H2O
- Properties
- Yellow Ochre provides artists with earthtones from cream to brown. It has good hiding power, produces a quick drying paint, and can be safely mixed with other pigments. Its transparency varies widely from opaque shades to more transparent ones, which are valued for their use as glazes. If gypsum is present, Yellow Ochre is not suitable for frescoing. (See Brown Ochre, PY43.) PY42 is made from synthetic iron oxides. PY43 is made from natural iron oxide.
- Permanence
- Yellow Ochre has excellent permanence because ochres are some of the most permanent pigments available.
- History
- Ochre comes from the Greek word ochros, meaning pale yellow. It was one of the first pigments to be used by human beings, and evidence of its use has been found at 300,000 year old sites in France and the former Czechoslovakia.
- Description
- Chamois, Iron Yellow, Mars Orange, Mars Yellow, Minette, Ochre, Sil, Yellow Earth, Yellow Ochre, Yellow Oxide. Varieties of Yellow Ochre include Brown Ochre, Flesh Ochre, Roman Ochre, Spruce Ochre, and Transparent Gold Ochre.
Viridian
- Pigment code
- PG18
- Type
- inorganic
- Chemical name
- chromium(III)-oxide dehydrate
- Chemical formula
- Cr2O3 • 2 H2O or Cr2(OH3)
- Properties
- Viridian is the standard green and is stable, powerful, and cold with an emerald green undertone. It has a transparent hue, good tinting strength, a dark masstone that can be almost black at full strength, and a slow drying time in oil form. Viridian is commonly replaced by the darker, more saturated, and staining Phthalo Greens, but its properties make it a necessary part of the palette of an experienced landscape painter.
- Permanence
- Viridian has excellent permanence, except in high-temperature work, and is highly valued as a glazing color.
- Toxicity
- Viridian is slightly toxic.
- History
- Viridian’s name comes from the Latin viridis, meaning green. The process for manufacturing Viridian, or Transparent Oxide of Chromium, was patented by Guignet in Paris in 1859. However, it had actually been discovered by Pannetier and Binet in 1838. Viridian replaced Verdigris, which was reactive and unstable, and Emerald Green, which was a poisonous copper aceto-arsenite used as a rat poison in the sewers of Paris.
- Description
- Emerald Chromium Oxide, Emeraude Green, French Veronese Green, Guignet’s Green, Pannetier's Green, Permanent Green, Smaragd Green, Transparent Oxide of Chromium, Vert Emeraude. Casali's Green and Mittler's Green are varieties of Viridian. Viridian has historically been sold under the name Emerald Green, but they are currently considered to be and are marketed as two different pigments.
