Jackson's : Pastel Painting Workshop : Seascapes in Pastels with Kevin Scully : 19th September 2026
SKU WKS-STR-KS-SIP
Atmospheric Seascapes in Soft Pastel with Kevin Scully is a one-day pastel workshop on Saturday, 19th September 2026, 10am-4pm, at Jackson’s Attic Studio at Griffin Mill. Located in Thrupp, near Stroud, in Gloucestershire, Griffin Mill is an atmospheric converted Victorian mill in the heart of the stunning Cotswolds. All abilities welcome. In this workshop, you’ll be using soft pastels on pastel paper to create atmospheric and expressive seascapes. You will be introduced to several established techniques for working with this vibrant medium, alongside approaches that may be new to you. If drawing is not your strongest skill, this subject matter is well suited to building confidence. The direct application of soft pastels encourages quick, expressive strokes, allowing you to capture fleeting moments such as the movement of waves as they break onto the shore. You will be guided through material choices and color blending techniques to achieve both subtle transitions and more dramatic effects. There will be reference images available for you to use on the day. Recommended Equipment List: The shop will be open from 9am, so you will have time to purchase materials before the workshop. Our artist staff can offer you any advice you need. Soft Pastels: A wide selection of soft pastels, including neutral tones, whites, and off-whites. Be sure to bring a strong range of blues and greens suitable for skies and seascapes. There are Jackson’s Handmade Soft Pastel Sets available in the shop to purchase on the day. Pastel Paper: A selection of A4 and A3 pastel papers in a range of colors, excluding white. Mid-tone papers provide an excellent base for building a painting. Kevin recommends smoother texture pastel paper rather than rough. You could use a pad such as the Daler-Rowney Murano Pastel Paper Gummed Pads . Pastel Card: If you would like to explore a more robust surface, sheets of pastel card are also worth trying. Please purchase pastel paper and card in advance or call ahead to check what is in stock at Jackson’s Art Stroud shop. Other Materials: Paper stump or tortillon for blending. Putty rubber. Sandpaper block. Craft knife or scalpel. Stiff brush for removing pastel dust. Small spray can of fixative. Masking tape. Tissues or baby wipes. A couple of sheets of inexpensive A4 copy paper for masking. An apron or old clothes. About Kevin: Kevin Scully is a professional artist, writer, illustrator, and tutor. He trained at Wimbledon School of Art and is an experienced teacher in drawing and painting in all media. His career has included painting scenery for theatre and television, illustration work in advertising and publishing, and designing an award-winning garden at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. He is a winner of The Artist Winsor & Newton Painting Prize and the Clairefontaine Art Award, and has led painting holidays around the world. He currently teaches at The Sunningwell School of Art, The Cornwall School of Art, City Arts Newbury, Ardington School of Arts and Crafts, Bullclough School of Art, and Blackdowns Artist Retreat.
