About this product range
Dedicated to handmade integrity, Williamsburg Handmade Oils are crafted by skilled American artisans using top-quality pigments from around the world. Each of the more than 140 colors in the line possesses a unique consistency and texture — some are slightly gritty, while others are extremely smooth. This is what makes Williamsburg Handmade Oils so unique and prized by the painters who choose them.
Colors are made in small batches no larger than five gallons at a time to ensure the highest level of control. Pigments are carefully ground to enhance the beauty and luminosity specific to each, and then combined with pure, premium, alkali-refined and pH-balanced linseed oil. Every ingredient is hand-measured, and every batch is scrutinized for quality.
Most Williamsburg Oils are considered to have excellent lightfastness (LF I), with the exception of Alizarin Crimson and Van Dyke Brown, which have very poor lightfastness (LFIII).
__Special Edition Colors__ — Williamsburg offers four Special Edition iron oxide colors that utilize the same pigments as standard Williamsburg colors, but are milled to a finer consistency to make them suitable for glazing. Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide is based on Stil De Grain, with a dark yellow-brown masstone that gives way to amber and light ochre when glazing. Transparent Orange Iron Oxide is based on Italian Pink, and produces a very deep red-orange masstone that results in rich orange-red glazes. Transparent Brown Iron Oxide has its origins in Dutch Brown, and results in translucent brown glazes reminiscent of coffee or tanned leather. Transparent Red Oxide is a finer version of Brown Pink, and results in red tones reminiscent of stained cherry wood when glazing.

Green Earth
- Pigment code
- PG23
- Type
- earth
- Chemical name
- hydrated iron, magnesium, aluminum and potassium silicates
- Chemical formula
- K[(Al,FeIII),(FeII,Mg)](AlSi3,Si4)O10(OH)2
- Properties
- Green earth is a natural pigment that varies from yellow and olive to blue-green in its composition and hues. It is semi-transparent, has low hiding power and tinting strength, muddies and darkens in oil, and is particularly good for tempera and fresco painting.
- Permanence
- Green Earth has excellent permanence and lightfastness, although some varieties can be developed by light calcining. It is one of the most permanent pigments because Earths are not affected by sunlight or atmospheric conditions.
- Toxicity
- Green Earth has no significant hazards.
- History
- Terre verte is French for green earth. It was discovered in antiquity, and its use has been traced to the Ajanta caves in India and a variety of Roman sites, including Pompeii. Green Earth was very popular for underpainting flesh tones in medieval paintings because this green was the compliment to pink on the medieval color wheel. Its use declined after the Renaissance. The natural supplies of the pigment are mostly depleted, and manufacturers currently duplicate the hue using mineral bases like Viridian, iron oxide, or chromium oxide, or artificial ceramic colorants. Pigments sold under this name can also be the result of mixing Sienna and Phthalo Green.
- Description
- Celadon Green, Celadonite. Green Bice, Holly Green, Stone Green, Terra Verte, Verdeterra, Verdetta, Veronese Green. Bohemian Earth is a high quality, clear, middle-green variety. Cyprus Green Earth, or Cyprian, is a high quality yellowish variety. Tyrolean and Verona Earth are high quality bluish varieties. Verona Brown is a calcinated variation of Green Earth. Burnt Green Earth is similar to Transparent Brown
