R&F Pigment Sticks put the paint directly in your hand, eliminating the separation between brush and surface. These are true oil colors, handmade in small batches with just enough wax added to shape them into a stick. Made with three simple, traditional materials—natural bee and plant waxes, linseed oil, and pigments of unmatched purity—their lipstick-soft consistency invites spontaneous mark making and results in strong, durable films.

With a range of 96 colors, R&F Pigment Sticks offer a liberating alternative to the limited palettes of traditional printmaking or tube paints. Use them on their own or mix with traditional oil colors. Thin them with turpentine or mineral spirits, or work them directly into stand oil, linseed oil, alkyd mediums, or resin gels. Whether you're sketching loosely on canvas or building up rich layers, Pigment Sticks deliver a direct, tactile experience that bridges the gap between drawing and painting.

They work on any surface suitable for traditional oil painting—sized canvas, paper, or panels. For a faster-drying, matte finish, try more absorbent surfaces like clay-coated papers. Once fully dry, Pigment Stick artwork can be varnished just like any oil painting.

Small sticks are 38 ml—about the same as a standard tube of artists' oil paint. Medium sticks are 100 ml. Large sticks are 188 ml.

Cadmium Orange

Pigment code
PO20
Type
cadmium
Chemical name
cadmium sulfide and cadmium selenide
Chemical formula
CdS x CdSe
Properties
Cadmium Orange was the first true orange and was made by mixing Cadmium Yellow with Cadmium Red. It is a pure hue with excellent opacity and low toxicity compared with its predecessors. It also has very high hiding power. The greatest tinting strengths are possessed by the deeper shades. Only the highest grades contain pure Cadmium Orange without barium mixed in it. Cadmium pigments have been partially replaced by azo pigments, which are similar in lightfasness to the cadmium colors, cheaper, and non-toxic.
Permanence
Cadmium Orange has excellent permanence, but like many cadmium pigments, it will fade in fresco or mural painting. The deeper varieties of this pigment are the most permanent. The paler varieties have been known to fade when exposed to sunlight.
Toxicity
Cadmium Orange is a known human carcinogen. It is extremely toxic if inhaled and slightly toxic if ingested.
History
Cadmiums get their names from the Latin word cadmia, meaning zinc ore calamine, and the Greek word kadmeia, meaning Cadmean earth, first found near Thebes, the city founded by the Phoenician prince Cadmus. Metallic cadmium was discovered in 1817 by Friedrich Strohmeyer. It was used sparingly after its discovery due to the scarcity of cadmium metal.
