Scrim, or tarlatan, is an open-weave cotton fabric lightly stiffened with starch, used for wiping etching and drypoint plates prior to printing. Before use, it needs to be ‘broken in’ by softening and loosening the fibers – typically by pulling it or working it around a table leg – after which it is formed into a wiping pad. This process allows for controlled ink removal and clean highlights. The fabric measures 114cm in width.
