Jackson's : Watercolor Workshop : Plein Air Watercolor Sketches with Kevin Scully : 12th September 2026

<p>Plein Air Watercolor Sketchbook with Kevin Scully is a one-day outdoor painting workshop on Saturday, 12th September 2026, 10am-4pm, in the village of Painswick. We will meet at The Painswick Centre, Bisley Street, Painswick, Stroud, Gloucestershire, GL6 6QQ.</p> <p>A day spent painting in the pretty village of Painswick, working in sketchbooks using watercolor or your favorite water-based medium. Your sketches can become the basis for future paintings or serve as a visual reminder of your day painting en plein air.</p> <p>You will be shown how to choose the best viewpoints and given advice on composition, materials, and equipment, what to include in your sketches and, importantly, what to leave out. Kevin will share examples of different approaches to filling a sketchbook and will provide demonstrations throughout the day.</p> <p>We will meet at The Painswick Centre at 9.45am for a brief introduction to the workshop before heading out. Please be prepared for a five-minute walk on flat ground to the painting location.</p> <p>Should the weather be unfavorable at any time, photographic reference will be provided so you can continue working in the studio. Your paintings can be simple sketches or more detailed studies, depending on your preference. If you've never painted outside before, this is your opportunity to experience painting en plein air.</p> <p><strong>Recommended Equipment List:</strong></p> <p><strong>Sketchbook:</strong></p> <p>A watercolor sketchbook in landscape format, no larger than A4. If possible, choose a paper weight of at least 200gsm. A NOT surface (Cold Pressed) paper with a medium grain is recommended. This may be an empty paint box filled with colors squeezed from tubes, or one containing pans of paint. Brushes should be of good quality and form a fine point when wet. Sable brushes are excellent, but synthetic alternatives are very good substitutes. He trained at Wimbledon School of Art and is an experienced teacher in drawing and painting in all media. His career has included painting scenery for theatre and television, illustration work in advertising and publishing, and designing an award-winning garden at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. He is a winner of The Artist Winsor & Newton Painting Prize and the Clairefontaine Art Award, and has led painting holidays around the world.</p> <p>He currently teaches at The Sunningwell School of Art, The Cornwall School of Art, City Arts Newbury, Ardington School of Arts and Crafts, Bullclough School of Art, and Blackdowns Artist Retreat. He runs workshops at Marlborough College Summer School and the Oxford Summer School.
