About this supply

A Splash of Watercolor - Beach Scenes with Kevin Scully is a one-day watercolor workshop on Saturday, 31st October 2026, 10am-4pm, at Jackson’s Attic Studio at Griffin Mill. Located in Thrupp, near Stroud, in Gloucestershire, Griffin Mill is an atmospheric converted Victorian mill in the heart of the stunning Cotswolds. This workshop is suitable for all, although some experience using watercolors would be an advantage.

You will be using watercolor in a loose and lively way, focusing on creating expressive images rather than detailed studies. The workshop will center on painting beach scenes, capturing the movement and atmosphere of the sea.

You will learn how to paint water using wet-on-wet techniques for soft effects, alongside more defined strokes for reflections. Beginning with a base wash, you will develop the painting while the paper is still damp, preserving white areas for light reflections and considering the colors of the sky, surrounding landscape, and foreground elements to build a convincing composition.

You will also explore the use of white gouache and masking fluid in a controlled way to introduce highlights and enhance the tops of waves. Reference images will be available to work from on the day.

Recommended Equipment List:

The shop will be open from 9am, so you will have time to purchase materials before the workshop. Our artist staff can offer you any advice you need.

Please feel free to amend this list as necessary and include any of your favorite materials.
