About this supply

Join Evie Hatch, Studio and Materials Specialist at Jackson’s and co-creator of the Pigment Stories book and online series, for In Pursuit of the Perfect Blue: From Precious Stones to Modern Chemistry on 3 December 2026, 7pm–8:30pm at Jackson’s Art Dalston, London. This relaxed evening talk explores the centuries-long search for blue pigments that were brilliant, affordable, and permanent.

Trace the history of blue from precious natural materials such as lapis lazuli and azurite to later discoveries including Prussian Blue, Cobalt Blue and Synthetic Ultramarine, and discover how these pigments expanded the possibilities available to artists.

Evie will also explore why some historic blues have faded or changed colour over time, leaving paintings looking very different from when they were first made, as well as the accidents, experiments, and chemical breakthroughs that transformed how artists could use blue.

About Evie Hatch

Evie’s interests lie in the history and characteristics of artists’ colours and materials, research that plays a significant role in her own art practice. In 2023, she completed an MA in History of Art at the Courtauld Institute, London.

Explore Evie’s Instagram

Jackson’s Art Workshops in Dalston are a space to make, experiment, and connect.
