Painting Portraits of Children : Book by Simon Davis

Painting Portraits of Children by Simon Davis explores one of the most demanding tasks an artist can undertake. Drawing on his experience as one of the country's leading portrait painters, Simon offers rare insight into how to create a sympathetic and truthful likeness in oils, avoiding sentimentality while capturing the essence and character of a child. He explains the importance of composition, balance, tonality, palette, and atmosphere, and shares clear guidance on the entire process from first ideas to laying down the final brushstrokes.

The book includes step-by-step demonstrations featuring children of different ages, backgrounds, and groupings, offering practical examples of approach and technique. An interview with fellow Royal Society of Portrait Painters artist Andrew James adds further depth, making this a valuable resource for artists seeking to develop both confidence and sensitivity when painting children.
