Jackson's : Oil Painting Workshop : Portraits in Oil with Svetlana Kornilova : 27th June 2026

Portrait Painting in Oils with Svetlana Kornilova is a one-day oil painting workshop on 27th June 2026 at Jackson’s Attic Studio at Griffin Mill. Located in Thrupp, near Stroud, in Gloucestershire, Griffin Mill is an atmospheric converted Victorian mill in the heart of the stunning Cotswolds. All abilities welcome.

This workshop will focus on working from a live model to introduce students to the key principles of portrait painting. The day will begin with a practical demonstration by Svetlana, followed by guided independent work. By the end of the session, you will have completed a finished or near-finished oil portrait study.

Students will be shown the main stages of building a portrait in oil paint, from the initial block-in, through to modeling form and developing tone and color. Svetlana will demonstrate her working process step by step, allowing you to observe each stage before applying the techniques in your own painting. Individual guidance and support will be provided throughout the day.

What You Will Learn:

Understand the basic proportions and structure of the human head. Learn how to model form using tone. Explore the use of warm and cool color relationships in portrait painting. Learn essential color mixes for skin tones. Gain experience working from a live model. Produce a finished or near-finished oil portrait study.

Recommended Equipment List:

The shop will be open from 9am, so you will have time to purchase materials before the workshop. Our artist staff can offer you any advice you need.

Paint:

Jackson’s Artist Oil Colors – recommended colors include Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Hue, Violet, Cerulean Blue Hue, Phthalo Turquoise, French Ultramarine Blue, Vandyke Brown, Raw Umber, and Mars Brown.

Studio Essentials Wooden Palette (Rectangular) Jackson’s Pure Sol Oil Paint Solvent and Brush Cleaner Soft pieces of cloth or wet wipes. Two jars with lids. A packed lunch, water, and snacks (there is no café at Griffin Mill). Tea and coffee will be provided throughout the day.

About Svetlana:

Svetlana Kornilova is a London-based oil painter specializing in portraiture and figurative compositions. Her work explores light, form, and the psychological presence of the sitter, using traditional oil painting techniques to anchor the human figure in physical space.

She studied monumental and decorative painting at the Stroganov Moscow State University of Art and Industry and completed professional development at the I.E. Repin St. Petersburg State Academic Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Svetlana has exhibited internationally, including at Dulwich Picture Gallery, Mall Galleries, and the London Art Biennale. In January, she presented a solo exhibition, Places & Faces, at Aleph Contemporary Gallery in Stroud. She is a member of the Society of Women Artists.
