Art and Science of the Crystal Palace Dinosaurs : Book by Ellinor Michel and Mark Witton

Art and Science of the Crystal Palace Dinosaurs by Ellinor Michel and Mark Witton celebrates the remarkable series of 37 prehistoric animal sculptures unveiled in Crystal Palace Park in 1854. These iconic creations, ranging from rhinoceros-like dinosaurs and regal extinct mammals to serpentine marine reptiles and giant amphibians, captured a vivid snapshot of mid-19th-century palaeontological knowledge. The book places the sculptures within the wider context of the Crystal Palace project and examines how they were conceived, constructed with unconventional materials, and received by contemporary and modern audiences.

Richly illustrated with historic and modern photographs, along with original paintings that offer updated scientific interpretations, the book provides the most comprehensive account of these world-famous artworks to date. Written in collaboration with the Friends of Crystal Palace Dinosaurs charity, it highlights the sculptures’ enduring significance as milestones in education and palaeoartistry.
